Task Description: The students at Team TUI are presently investigating the idea of inferencing in reading, which involves drawing a conclusion based on evidence and logical reasoning. This is a reasonable skill that helps readers to comprehend and interpret the text more efficiently. Here is one of my inderence tasks.
ITEM 1 NEW LEADER
They snarled and showed their teeth as they approached each other. There was no turning back for either of them; this would decide which one would lead the pack.
- What are they?
- Wolves
-
- How were they going to decide who would be the leader of the pack?
- The strongest of all the wolves is going to be the leader.
ITEM 2 GLINT IN THE WATER

- What was the glint in the water?
- Most likely a fish
ITEM 3 RAIN DANCE
The heat was intense. It had been like this for months. When the rain finally arrived they went outside and danced in it.
-
- Why did they dance in the rain?
- Because for the past few months it has been boiling and now there is finally rain.
ITEM 4 THE ROCK
A rock lay on the carpet. Glass was everywhere.
-
- What had happened?
- Somebody threw a rock at the window
ITEM 5 THE RIDER
Riding bareback at full gallop was frightening for a young, inexperienced rider like me. When we got to the river the horse immediately stopped. I didn’t.
-
- What happened to the rider?
- I’m not sure, but I think the rider fell off the horse
